Writing your own Will – How hard can it be?

September 01, 2022

It couldn’t be simpler – but it may not be legal!

All over the world, many people believe that jotting down a few notes on a piece of paper and signing it is enough but certain criteria have to be met to make a Will legally valid. Otherwise it could fall under intestacy rules, giving you no control at all.

Here are some pitfalls of making your own Will:

  • Does anyone know it exists or where to find it?
  • Confusing, vague or poor wording
  • Unacceptable wishes that cannot be carried out
  • Missed assets, including those overseas
  • Childrens’ guardians not named
  • Childrens’ needs not provided for
  • Step-children not correctly provided for
  • Unmarried partners not correctly provided for
  • No executors named
  • Not witnessed correctly
  • Not dated
  • Inheritance tax not considered
  • Potential for it to be challenged after your death

There are many legalities and matters to consider and most people are not aware of them, leading to inadequate Wills resulting in costly court action.

It is logical to have your Will professionally prepared, giving you and your loved ones peace of mind.
